Roses are beautiful but can be a bit challenging to grow. There are many insects and diseases that can chip away at the health of your roses. He are six symptoms of disease in your roses and how to treat them.

1. Malformed young canes or canes that are stunted

this is a fungal disease which is called powdery mildew. It covers stems bods and leaves with a white powder that spreads in the breeze. The leaves will turn purple and curl. To treat this, spray with Benomyl or Funginex.

2. Black spots on leaves

Aptly named, this disease is usually referred to as black spot. These spots are circular and have fringed edges causing the leaves to yellow. To treat this you want to remove infected leaves and pick up any that have fallen around the plant. You can also buy artificial sprays to treat and prevent black spot.

3. Stunted or malformed flowers and leaves

Malformed leaves and flowers can be caused by spider mites. These little tiny mites can be green red or yellow and usually hang around on the underside of the leaves where they have a good old time sucking the juices. You can try applying Isotox or Orthene to help treat these little pests.

4. Blistered leaves

If you notice the underside of your roses leaves are blistered you may have the disease known as rust. Blisters are an orange red color in turn black in the fall. This disease can live throughout the winter and in spring when new sprouts formidable attack them. To treat this get rid of any leaves that are infected both on the plants and on the ground. Spray Funginex or Benomyl every seven to 10 days for treatment.

5. Flowers which are malformed or do not open

this is another problem with roses that can be caused by bugs called Thrips. These are fain brownish yellow bugs that have fringed wings and damage your plant by sucking the juices from the flower buds. To get rid of them you’ll have to cut off the infested flowers. Malathion and Orthene may also be used to treat this problem.

6. Leaves that are weak and mottled or show tiny white webs underneath

here you may have a problem with aphids. These tiny blogs can be green and brown or red and often hang around in clusters under the leaves and flower buds where they suck juices. Try spraying with diazinon or malathion in on to get rid of them.

If you’re roses to not have any of these pests or diseases but are still unhealthy looking you might want to look at the way you are fertilizing them. Roses are very hungry and do require fertilization. Talk to your local gardening store to find out what’s best for your area.

There are several types of exotic flowers to choose from, however, some are more popular and easier to obtain than others. Exotic flowers make good gifts for men as well as women. Especially exotic flowers such as bamboos, bonsai, ginger or dracaena have a touch of beauty and a sense of class and masculinity.

These kinds of exotic flowers and plants could be very impressive in a home or a contemporary apartment. Here are some good ideas for exotic plants for men:

Ginger:

The exotic flowers of the ginger family, the Zingiberaceae, are composed of a large group of tropical herbs. Many gingers are native to the fields and rain forests of Indo-Malaysia. Their name originates from the Greek word ziniberi.

Despite the fact that ginger is more commonly used as a spice, the ginger blossom is one of the most astounding tropical exotic flowers in its fragrance and appearance.

Heliconia:

The exotic flower called the Heliconia is named after the great Mount Helicon. The root word comes out of Greek mythology. Nine goddess muses of the arts and sciences lived in the great Mount Helicon.

Because they have a shape that resembles a beak, Heliconias are sometimes called lobster claws or parrot flowers as well. Exclusive to Central America, South America, and the islands of the South Pacific, the heliconia is a rare beauty indeed. This wonderful wxotic flower comes in a wide variety of different kinds of shades such as pinks, yellows, oranges and reds. They are very large with extended rhizomes, and grow in damp places such as mountains, forests, and lowlands.

The good news about both ginger and heliconia, is that they do not require any sort of complicated care. All you have to do is cut the stem and be sure to use the cleanest water possible in the vase.

Anyone can add a striking touch of color to their home, or even the office with the elegant of wild exotic flowers.

Bonsai:

These beauties are tiny Asian trees, especially trained with wires to be “sculptured” so to speak into beautiful, natural-looking shapes. The bonsai takes care and attention to survive, but they are definitely something to be proud if. If you know someone who loves the look of plants such as this, and many men do, a bonsai makes an incredible, exotic gift no one else will think to buy. Surprise your guy-friend, boyfriend, spouse or significant other with a stunning bonsai tree for his garden, patio, outdoors or indoors for his home. And these bonsai will be stunning as well as long lasting as long as they are properly cared for.

“Curb Appeal” is a very powerful term used in Real Estate, usually leading homeowners to believe, that drastic changes are necessary in order to sell their homes. Unfortunately, most sellers usually either spend too much on their property makeover, or ignore the laws of curb appeal all together. When trying to sell a home, both of these mistakes can cost you.

Here are 4 tips to better curb appeal, that won’t break the bank:

1. A view from the road: Many people perform their house hunting by driving around the neighborhoods they would like to live in. It would be a shame if they decided to stop at your neighbor’s house instead of yours because they simply couldn’t see it from the road. Unless your house is set back a long distance from the road, has a privacy fence or a screening of trees; make sure the limbs of all your front yard trees are pruned up in a way that your house is clearly visible from the street.

2.Size matters: Another important factor in viewing a home, is the presentation of size. Especially important in ranch and cape style houses is the relationship between the size of your foundation plantings and the size of your home. Overgrown shrubs and trees along the foundation of your home can block up to 50% of the view of your house, including windows. This will dwarf your home, making it look smaller than it actually is. Pruning or removing overgrown shrubs and trees can make a world of difference in terms getting your home noticed.

3.Keeping it clean: Most people would agree that a sloppy presentation on the outside is a fair indicator of a sloppy presentation on the inside. People are judged by their cover, and so is your house. So if you want to be sure your home is looking its best for weekend viewing, follow these steps:

3a. Cut the lawn on Thursdays. A fresh cut before the weekend makes a huge difference in appearance. Plan your cutting on Thursday to build in a rain day. Hire a company if you can’t do it. You will probably need them to take care of maintenance until you close on the house, while you are in transition to your new home.

3b. Remove all child and pet toys from the yard.

3c. Maintain weeds in planting beds, walkways, driveway and along street curbing.

4.A Touch of Color: Fresh annuals and perennials planted in flower pots or in landscape beds, will be a refreshing welcome those who visit your home. Be sure to consult your local nursery or landscaper, to select the right flowers for your zone.

Good luck and happy selling!

Growing flowers is more difficult than many people consider it. Basically, that is because you have to decide a few things before you plant the flower itself. There are a lot of ways to produce a flower. You may, for example, buy the flower itself, and replant it in your garden. You may choose to grow the flower from a seed, a time-consuming but rewarding process. You may as well grow your flower from a clip made from other plants. And you may use flower bulbs. That is, most people admit, the easiest way. A great number of different flowers are grown that way, such as daffodils, daylilies, tulips, gladiolus, crocuses, dahlias and many more.

The reason why people choose to grow flowers from flower bulbs is because that is extremely easy. Planting and taking care of flower bulbs until they bloom into beautiful flowers doesn’t require any additional skills or knowledge from you. The other reason is because flower bulbs for sale can be found in every local nursery or a landscape supply store.

Stores offer wide variety of different flower bulbs. Home improvement stores like Lowe’s or home depot sell flower bulbs. Department stores are another possibility: take Wal-Mart, for example. You can find great quantity of various flower bulbs there. Last but not least come discount stores, such as 99 Cents Only, Dollar Tree or Dollar General. They are seasonal, but you can find them a practical solution if you like to buy cheaper flower bulbs. But you have to be very careful when choosing flower bulbs from these stores: you’ve got to make sure you pick up only viable ones.

Another way to buy flower bulbs is using online nurseries. It is getting more and more popular these days. Many online stores such as Nature Hill’s Nursery, Schreiner’s Gardens and American Meadows offer all kinds of flower bulbs that you may admire. The easiest way is to offer flower bulbs on EBay! People prefer purchasing flower bulbs online, because they save time going around the stores, searching for the bulbs. It is faster, indeed, but you’d better have in mind that online purchasing doesn’t offer you the possibility to inspect the viability of the flower bulbs you have ordered. You may be disappointed when you see that the delivered flower bulbs are not what you expected. To avoid this, order only from reputable nurseries: for example, if you like to buy tulips, use the best online nurseries, which come from Holland. Always look through different possibilities, and consult with other people, so that you stay informed about the best online nurseries and get flower bulbs with finest quality.

Whatever way you choose to purchase flower bulbs, you may come to discover how great a variety all companies offer. Always pick up the most suitable for you, having in mind the above-mentioned pieces of advice.

Jon Jost, independent film-maker. The early films

2. Flower

Jon Jost’s short film ‘Flower’ (1970) explores the relationship between language and meaning. A direct parallel is drawn between film language and verbal language. The film opens with a quote, in the form of a printed text, from Mallarm? saying that when he reads the word ‘flower’ he experiences a sense of beauty. But there is no flower actually there, only the word, and the associated idea of a flower. Therefore, he concludes, the word ‘flower’ denotes a beautiful idea.

Jost follows this with many shots of flowers, and again the sequence goes on for a long time, giving us ample time to consider what is taking place. We begin by looking for the flower which matches our idea of a flower, and none of them do. Our idea of a flower does not exist in the real world, only specific individual flowers, such as the ones we are seeing on the screen, exist there. But if we cannot see our idea of a flower on the screen, nor, we realise, can we see any real flowers, all we can see are projected patterns of light shade and colour.

The film ends with a quote praising the beauty of ‘hues conceived in the mind’, and deploring the folly of men who think such beauty can be represented by mere ‘grunts and squeaks’, (i.e. language).

Jost is demonstrating that film itself cannot present us with reality, or with meanings, film is a mere language, patterns of light and shade, grunts and squeaks. It is we who attribute meaning to the images, and any reality we might think we are seeing in the film is merely an illusion. Jost continually reminds us of this fact, even in the features, in order that we should see through the illusion to what is being communicated from him to us about our real lives in the real world.

Having established that film is only a language, it follows that everything we see on the screen is determined by the film-maker’s intentions towards us, and towards his subject matter. Jost has defined film (In ‘Susannah’s Film’, 1969) as ‘light, shade, and bias’, and his film ‘13 Fragments and 3 Narratives from Life’ (1968) is a complex and fascinating essay on this subject.

Today’s silk topiary plants and trees and well designed and intricately painted to resemble the natural plants and trees. They are also created of durable materials which allow them to last a long time and also to withstand a lot of damaging factors. Today’s silk topiary plants also have great advantages of the natural plants. This page will tell you about a few of them.

Don’t Need Much Care
Silk topiary plants don’t need as much care as natural plants. Because they are dead and not alive, like natural plants, silk topiary trees, plants, and flowers don’t need any trimming or much cleaning up to stay looking pretty. In fact, silk topiary plants will always maintain their shape. They don’t need to be trimmed or modified in any way, unless it is your own liking. Also, you don’t have to risk falling to the ground climbing high ladders to get to the top of the trees so you can spruce them up and keep them looking good.

Don’t Need Natural Elements
Unlike natural plants, artificial silk topiaries don’t need any water, sunlight, air, or nutrients. They are virtually carefree and don’t impose any damage to your soil through growing roots, or disturb your environment by growing in certain directions. Your silk topiary plants always stay in the same shape, every time, everywhere. Because silk topiary plants don’t need natural elements, they don’t face natural problems like turning a different color due to a lack of nutrients or a lack of sunlight. Your silk plants always maintain their looks.

Don’t Change with Seasons
Here’s a great advantage of silk topiaries over natural ones: they don’t change with the seasons. Changing with the seasons could mean a lot for your natural trees. The most common or most troublesome problem during change of seasons is loss of leaves. Many natural plants lose their leaves during the Fall season. This could adversely impact your natural topiaries. They would lose their shape and thus lose their beauty. But silk plants don’t go through such problems. They’ll always maintain their shape. Natural plants’ leaves also color during changing seasons. This is another change you don’t have to worry about with silk topiary plants.

Don’t Need to Stay in One Place
Another wonderful advantage of silk topiaries over natural ones is that silk topiaries don’t have to stay in one place permanently. They can be moved from place to place and placed where they look best. Have you ever wanted a certain natural plant to have been in a certain area of your garden? Did you even think about moving it? Of course not. Silk topiary plants can be moved to any area in the garden where they fit best. If you have a whole lot of them, you can always rearrange your garden and make it a changing one.

Flowers Truly Reach Your Soul.

Flowers are a heartfelt, natural way to lift our spirits. They can provide a smile for a tired face or even brighten a room for a convalescent. Just imagine your favourite flower. Are you smiling yet? You are definitely in a better mood.

There isn’t a doubt that beautiful surroundings provide us with a favorite environment that helps us thrive. Flowers are an simple and affordable way to add a splash of color and emotion into your life.

Tropical flowers are an exciting new change from traditional floral gifts like roses , and with modern shipping methods they are availble worldwide. Their large size and vibrant colors make them an impressive gift for favorite occasions like Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries.

Flowers can be purchased from local florists or “Grower Direct” services that ship them worldwide. If purchasing flowers to be shipped, make sure someone is waiting to accept the order and that they are not left with the mail on a back porch in the sun all afternoon until someone comes home from work. Flowers are shipped without any water supply, and neglecting them for hours on top of the shipping time can take days off their lifespan.

If you buy tropical flowers like heliconias or gingers, or if you are lucky enought to live in the tropics and have them in your garden, here are a select few tips to help them thrive and to extend their shelf life as cut flowers.

Caring for Cut Tropical Flowers
——————————————

one. Water your plants well and give them a large drink prior to cutting. This is significant for foliage plants as well because a few varieties “drink” incredibly little after cutting. Instead, they live off their stored sap.

Tropical plants have adapted to their natural environment which means frequent but short periods of heavy tropical downpour.

Look at the flower heads and notice how the petals are “cupped” to catch and store as much water as possible. These plants drink from the top and like being showered with water.

Look at the pattern on the leaves. The ridges channel water down to the stem where it’s absorbed into the many layers of the plant.

two. If your flowers have been out of water for any length of time after cutting, submerge them entirely in the bath for half an hour before placing them in a vase.

three. Cut three to four inches off the stem and then place them in a tall vase FULL of clean water.

four. Use a spray bottle to mist them at least twice a day.

five. Change the water and trim a new end on the stems every second or third day.

You are able to double the vase life of your cut flowers by applying these elementary techniques.

It is life, time for breathing deep, sighs and touching without fingers. Hummingbirds whizzing by my ears, the striking fear of that buzzing sound, so large and loud. Only they can scare me.

Ground squirrels like the cutest babies, curious and bold. Sitting on their tails, eating seeds so fast, my eyes water while trying to behold their skills. Oh my heart loves to be there with them. They like me to see them. They say ” hey mister, I remember you from the cold winter” So frosty then, now the lushness, the verdant, and prolific species of our Mother.

I walk the trails, alone, looking for other signs. Signs of man from a distant time. People who understood the tempo and rythm of her heart. Beating in time with some unknown syncopated clock.

Their arrowhead fragments are like neon signs to me. Some tell me, they have looked for all their lives, with not a sight of one. The smell of the earth tells me where they are. Something different about that place, you know, where they were.

They lived, died, and were reborn right in the same places for countless generations. Why wouldn’t it smell and look different. Yet, somehow they understood the breathing of Her. She coughed, they ran. She cried, they stood under it and consoled Her, all the while, bathing themselves in Her tears. honored citizens of Her kingdom.

Those people counted themselves, fortunate. It was an honor to live and be a part of the Mother, whom they called the Earth.
A priveledge, can you understand this.

If not, then consider this. Today, we walk right by the flowers that were once the life, medicine, and luxury of a long gone civilization. The old ones are gone. They seem to have taken the blessing of the Mother with them.

Animals, seems like someone said that, we have dominion over them. Words written and deduced by a man. We don’t think that way, well, many of us. We agree with the philosophy that we are a part of the Earth. As our fourlegged, and winged Brothers and Sisters exist with us, not for us.

It is there on the prairie of Prophetstown that I can feel those old ways seeping relentlessly into my bones. I am more concerned now that I stand, in the four seasons with the animals. I watch them live and die. Somehow, I live and die with each one of them, daily.

It is now, that, I can see so clearly what many of us have lost through our modern lives. Callous and unobserving, cold and distracted, no wonder I find so many people, who can’t seem to find their way in life. They are out there looking somehow, instinctively, coming to the prairie. They are trying to find a world which has not left us, but, one who is unseen by the many.

I kneel on the Earth, soft, loving and enveloping my soul. Warmth and kindness ooze from Her pores as I pray to my Creator. Humbled by my diminuative being before Him. She holds me in Her loving embrace like the wonderful Mother holds Her child. World, I can not express the great fortune that has befallen me on her Prairie.

Plants - like all living things - have basic, minimum requirements to sustain them. Generally, they are food, water and a suitable environment. But if you want them to thrive you need to get more specific. One of the best things to do is look around your neighborhood and see what kinds of plants look great. It means they love your local conditions and are probably easy to grow.

With real estate, the 3 key things to remember are location, location, location. With plants it’s preparation, preparation, preparation! Your plants will thrive if you take care of the basics before bringing them home. You need to make sure your soil is enriched with organic material, providing ongoing, accessable nutrients.
This will also help with conditioning of the soil, encouraging helpful micro-organisms and creating the correct PH levels. Continue to add organic matter to the soil for as long as you want a healthy garden.

Be sure to plant your new plant(s) in a suitable place for them in your garden. Some plants cannot tolerate full sun. Others need a minimum of five hours sun to do well.
Also, take into consideration the mature size of the plant. If you have a small courtyard planting a seedling that will mature into a large tree could be a costly mistake. Read the label on your plant or ask the nursery staff if you’re unsure.

Watering is essential to keeping your plants healthy and happy. Deep watering once or twice a week(depending on your rainfall and the season), rather than surface watering often is far more beneficial to plants as it encourages them to grow deeper root systems.
Deeper root systems allow plants to access water and valuable nutrients and gives them the ability to withstand longer periods without water.
Mulching with organic material is also beneficial to your garden, preventing moisture loss, soil erosion and helping with weed control, while adding organic matter.

Remember to experiment with your garden. That’s the only way to discover what plants love living in your area and those that don’t. Try different things and see what works for you. You could chat with your plants or even try planting with the cycles of the moon.

Children love to be involved with the garden. If they show interest you could offer them a small plot of their own to look after. They will be delighted with their efforts when they see tiny seeds mature into food or flowers, and so will you.

Hi, I am an avid organic gardener and am known by my friends as the recycling queen. I live on a small country property in South Australia. It is my mission to encourage as many people as possible to start organic gardening. This will improve both our individual lives and the wellbeing of our personal and global environments.

You’ve put all this effort into finding mementos for everyone else, but what about you? Of course you’ll want to save a piece of your own wedding as a token. It’s become increasingly popular for women to keep their wedding bouquet. It can be done, ladies! Nevertheless, in order to keep it, you need to preserve it-and you don’t need silk flowers to do it!

If you haven’t decided which wedding flowers to use for your bouquet yet-let us make a suggestion: Red Roses. If you decide to use white, they will look ivory after you preserve them. And by preserving them, we mean dry -freezing them. Fortunately, many floral businesses dry-freeze their bouquets in advance. You can request to have this done. The actual process is called: substantiation. During this process, the water is removed from the petals and turn from a solid state to a gas. Then a post-treatment solution is applied to the bouquet to keep moisture from entering the petals.

Most florists will tell you that roses are the best wedding flowers for preservation. Tulips and any other waxy flowers are probably some of the worst, as the waxy substance slows down the removal of moisture. Carnations too, can be preserved. But unlike roses, which undergo substantiation, Carnations are usually silica dried.

If you silica dried your floral arrangements, you’re probably wondering what you can do with them now. Silica drying is a temporary solution. Well, many brides take their silica dried flowers and dip them into hot paraffin. This will gift them a very glossy protective coating that will keep moisture at bay.

Nevertheless , green and foliage can be kept with a glycerin solution. Ivy for instance, will do best if you immerse the entire foliage into the solution. Note: many women swear by this method-place a few drops of green food coloring into the solution, as it’s been said to keep the leaves from turning brown.

It’s important to take several precautions after you’ve preserved your flowers. For instance: don’t place the foliage or flowers into direct sunlight, as the natural colors will fade and dissipate. In addition, placing them in a vase or shadow-box will keep the dust from collecting on them.

It’s always a good idea to practice on other wedding flowers and plants before the big day. This way you’re no longer experimenting, you’ll want exactly how to get the job done. Whichever method you try on your wedding bouquet, you’ll be satisfied with fresh-looking long after your wedding day has come.
